The Miranda Vineyard logo is inspired by the Galo de Barcelos, the unofficial symbol of Portugal, which personifies honesty, integrity, trust and honor. The legend of the Rooster is so old no one knows for sure its real source, but the tale has been passed on from generation to generation.
Once upon a time, in the quiet village of Barcelos, a crime was committed for which the inhabitants could find no wrongdoer. A stranger from the neighboring Spanish province of Galicia was visiting the village, and suspicion fell on him at once. The visiting Spaniard was seized and brought before the local magistrate during a feast at the magistrate’s home. The man was found guilty, yet vehemently protested his innocence. Seeing a rooster on a platter, he prayed, “Lord, as Peter, your servant, denied you at the cock’s crow, would that you show my innocence as your humble servant by this rooster’s crow…” And miraculously, the rooster came back to life, ruffled its feathers and crowed!
To this day, the Galo de Barcelos can be found in every home throughout Portugal, embroidered on fabrics, sculpted in clay and painted on pottery. Widely known also as a symbol of good luck, it embodies the love of life displayed by the Portuguese people.
